Description

CSS Albemare actionsPreviously, Albemare was successful in sinking USS Southfield on 19 April 19864, while driving away USS Miami in the process. With their waterborne communications severed, the Union forces were forced to surrender Plymouth to the Confederates. On 5 May, the US Navy, consisting of the"Double-ender" gunboats Sassacus, Wyalusing and Mattabesett, converted ferryboat Commodore Hull and small gunboat Ceres, were attacked by Albemare. The ironclad threatened the entire US Navy in the region. As a result, Cushing was ordered to attack at the end of October.
