Description

Subsequent ActionsMonitor remained in the Hampton Roads area and, in mid-1862 was actively employed along the James River in support of the Army's Peninsular Campaign in April and May. Caught in a storm off Cape Hatteras, she foundered on 31 December. Monitor’s wreck was discovered in 1973 and is now a marine sanctuary.

It depicts USS Monitor (at left) accompanied by the Federal warships Naugatuck, Dacotah, Seminole and Susquehanna (listed in no particular order, and depicted rather inaccurately), firing on the Confederate batteries at Sewell's point, near Norfolk.
