| Description | The Force Account spray crew from the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF was asked to assist the Lincoln RD on the Helena NF with the carbaryl spraying on their district compound. The BDNF crew has extensive experience in spraying this insecticide for use against mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) attack and infestation due to the on-going epidemic on the forest. When applied correctly [as shown in the photo to ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)], carbaryl will protect all species of pine against pine beetle attack at rates over 95% for up to two years. This employee is using a ground-based pump and spray system carried transported in a pickup to apply the chemical/water mix to the trees. U.S. Forest Service photo by Elisa Stamm. |
