Description

At the NSB meeting on May 5, 2015, board members and staff, NSF leaders and staff, and the public heard presentations by the heads of the two organizations selected to receive the 2015 NSB Group Public Service Award-- the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City and the Museum of Science, Boston’s National Center for Technological Literacy (NCTL). Ioannis Miaoulis (above), president and director of the Museum of Science, Boston, talked about advocating for the introduction of engineering in educational curriculum. Before these efforts, he said learning in school “was all about the natural world….However, if you look at the world around us, I would argue that 98 percent of the things that we deal with, that we wear, that we drive, are human made, are engineered. Miaoulis talked efforts to change schools with curriculum development and teacher training. He also talked about making an impact with partnerships in museum exhibits. He said the museum worked with Lucas Films to create a Star Wars exhibit that ended up reaching 30 million people with a program about the importance of nanotechnology. He also described a new partnership with Pixar to introduce computational thinking projects in the lives of people. Find out more about the Museum of Science, Boston’s “Science Behind Pixar” exhibit in this NSF press release.
