Description

The above photo shows the erection of bombproofs; Deadman's Ridge is on the left skyline, a chute for sand removal from the mine workings is shown in the foreground. Dead man's Ridge was a much contested Turkish salient running in between Pope's Hill and Quinn's Post. The hillsides were so steep that a sufficient number of men could not be accommodated near the front line. Round cricket-ball hand grenades would bound downhill and take out the troops, so these bomb-proofs were a necessary build for protection and survival. Quinn's Post was at the head of Monash Gully it was named after an Australian officer, who was killed defending the post.

The photo was taken by Jack L. Hilliard (1893-1955) during the 1915 Gallipoli Campaign of World War One. Hilliard was part of B Company, 9th Wellington Regiment, during the Gallipoli Campaign 1915.
