Summary edit
DescriptionNairn Museum, Viewfield, and Dr Grigor statue - geograph.org.uk - 1652222.jpg |
English: Nairn Museum, Viewfield, and Dr Grigor statue Originally a residence, this Georgian mansion-house is now the location of the Nairn Museum, which contains a wealth of historical and social records both of the community of the Fishertown of Nairn, and of the Victorian burgh and market town.
Dr John Grigor was a surgeon originally from Elgin who settled in Nairn in the 1830s. A sometimes controversial figure, he built a large hotel and several other properties in the town and was largely responsible for promoting Nairn as an attractive seaside health resort and visitor-destination in the Victorian era. His vision has stood the test of time: Nairn is still one of the main tourist destinations on the Moray Firth. |
