Description
English: c/n 7334

The J1N1-S was the first Japanese aircraft built specifically as a night-fighter. The J1N first flew in May 1941 and 479 of all models were built, of which this is the only survivor. The name Gekkō translates as ‘Moonlight’, while the type had the Allied reporting name ‘Irving’. This aircraft, the only surviving example, was being operated by the Yokosuka Kokatai of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force at the end of the war, and was later shipped to the United States for evaluation aboard the USS Barnes (CVE-20). She was initially given the Foreign Equipment number FE-3031 (later changed to T2-N700) and flew only three times in the United States, the third of these being to Park Ridge, Illinois, for storage as a museum airframe. Later transferred to the Smithsonian Institute, she was moved to Silver Hill, Maryland, where she was stored outside until space was found in 1974. A meticulous restoration began in 1979 and was completed in 1983 after 17,000 hours of work. She is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
