Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-59-Leonard Burdon
The Shields Daily Gazette for 1 November 1904 reports:
"At North Shields, Leonard Burton, barman, South Shields was charged with obtaining food and lodging to the amount of 17s from Kate Hughes, 10 Stanley Street West, by means of false pretences. Prosecutrix said that on Sept. 23rd represented to her that he had signed a contract with the manager of the Borough Theatre for two months, and on that representation he was taken in as a lodger at 17s a week. He remained for nine days leaving on Oct. 1st. Inquiries were made at the theatre and it was found that his story was untrue. Mr Horace Lee, theatre manager, said the accused had not been employed at the borough in any capacity. PC Brown said that he arrested the accused at South Shields in a public house where he had been employed as a barman since Thursday last. The accused said that he knew he told a lie, but he intended to pay when he obtained employment. The magistrates committed him to prison for seven days in the second division".
