DescriptionNanotube-nm-indexing-0-0.svg |
English: The topology of an infinitely long carbon nanotube is defined by two integers (n,m). Specifically, if the nanotube is rolled on the plane without slipping, each atom touches the plane at certain "even" vertices of the graphene hexagonal lattice. Successive touchdowns of the same atom are separated by a fixed vector w, which can be written as n×u + m×v where n,m are integers and u and v are the two vectors shown at the top. The pair (n.m) is called the "type" of the nanotube. Two different pairs may give nanotubes that are identical, or mirror images of each other. The red dots are a set of vectors whose nanotubes are all distinct, including under mirroring. They are the pars (n,m) with 0 ≤ m ≤ n and n > 0. |
