An all too brief 3 day visit to Wales and Snowdonia. Highlights? Snowdon Mountain Railway to the summit, ruins of Castle Dolbadarn. This is one of the oldest grid connected continuously operated hydro schemes in Wales. It was originally commissioned in 1906 to supply power to the slate industry in the area and was re-planted in 1988. Water is fed from Llyn Llydaw on the flank of Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) down a drop of 300m over a distance of a mile to a chapel style building. A single turbine produces up to 9.8 megawatts of electricity for the National Grid. It is noted as the first power station in the UK to generate alternating current (AC) electricity.
