Summary

Description

British W12 layout liquid-cooled piston engine. First run in 1917, the initial version of the Lion produced 450hp and was the most powerful aero-engine available during WW1. It was so advanced that it stayed in production until the mid-1930’s with later variants reaching 600hp. As well as a huge variety of standard service aircraft, such as the Vickers Vernon, it was also used for racing and notably powered the Supermarine S.4 and S.5 Schneider Trophy competitors. Some racing variants reached 1,350hp and were also used in powerboats and racing cars. Museu do Ar, Alverca do Ribatejo, Portugal
