n shines brightly in thy limpid stream. ^IT^HE first hour spent at this place appearedX. to produce the conviction, that we had wellselected a locality, wherein to devote that portionof our holiday destined for the coast. Aberystwithis situated at the extremity of the vale of Rheidol,amongst lofty hills, near the centre of, and over-looking the bay of Cardigan. A gently slopingbeach, a fine sea, clear water, and salubrious airbecome at once apparent. The town is built onan eminence overhanging the sea, and is the mostpopulous in the county, containing between fourand five thousand inhabitants. The fine and nowvery extended range of buildings, on the MarineParade and Crescent, is terminated, on the south-west, by the Castle Hill, and on the north, byCraiglais, or Constitution Hill, each of theseheights affording excellent walks and beautifulviews of the extensive bay, which is itself boundedon the north by the Caernarvonshire coast, beyondwhich a fine prospect of the Welsh mountains is

i ABEHYSTVVITH. 23 conspicuous, whilst on the south the shores ofCardigan and Pembroke limit the scene. Aberyst-with was formerly fortified by a castle, and withsurrounding walls, but scarcely a vestige of thelatter now remains. The castle was founded byGilbert de Strongbow in the reign of Henry theFirst, and rebuilt by Edward the First in 1277. Itwas situated on a lofty rock projecting into the sea.The ruins of several towers and of the walls stillremain, exhibiting to posterity, that it must havepossessed prodigious strength. It is known to havebeen the residence of Cadwallader. During thecivil wars it was battered by Cromwell from Pen-dinas Hill, and from this height he effected itsdemolition. Around the hill, on which the ruinsstand, the walks are, as before noticed, very in-viting, and from them Cader Idris, and evenSnowdon in very clear weather are visible. Thechurch, dedicated to Saint Michael, is separatedfrom the ruins of the castle by a stone wall. It isa handsome modern got
