Summary
editDescription |
English: View of a Plymouth locomotive of the narrow gauge railway built by the U.S. Navy Sixth Naval Construction Battalion on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Its construction began on 22 August 1943 and was finished just three days. The tracks were about 2000 metres long and double-tracked. Several long spurs, one 458 metres in length, led to ammunition dumps. In another two days a pier at its terminus was built. The railroad was dubbed the "Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Tokyo Railway" and was needed because trucks kept getting bogged down. The locomotives used came from Panama. |
