Description
English: Narrowboats in Gas Street. An unusually large tiller on "Ash", moored before pubs and restaurants with a view of the basin. This area was formerly industrial, then derelict. Now it is on the Birmingham tourist path. [Thanks - David Stowell] - The large tiller is the normal characteristic of a "butty" - the term for an unpowered narrowboat, normally towed by a motorised boat, or by horse in the days before motor boats. The large tiller is because the rudder itself is much larger, having to rely simply on the water swimming past the boat rather than the flow from a propeller. The tiller can be removed and turned over. When the boat is moored it is placed curving upwards so as not to obstruct access to the rear cabin. When in use it is turned over so that it can be used by someone standing in the cabin doorway.
