Description

Natica crassa Nyst, 1843 nec Schepman, 1909

Deutsch: Durchmesser 3 cm; Lillo Formation, Pliozän; Kallo, Belgien.
English: Diameter 3 cm; Lillo Formation, Pliocene; Kallo, Belgium; Shell of own collection, therefore not geocoded.
In 1909 a recent Natica-species from the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, was described under the same name Natica crassa by Shepman. Being a junior homonym (and not conspecific !), the latter (recent) species was renamed as Natica shepmani n. n. in 1927 by Finley (see: Finley, H.J. (1927): New Specific Names for Austral Mollusca; Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Vol. 57, p. 499.) The specimems of Nyst and Shepman are not conspecific.
Français : Coquille fossile de Natica crassa (Formation de Lillo, Pliocène), récoltée près de Kallo, en Belgique. Diamètre : 3 cm.
