Description
English: Natural gas well flare in southeastern New Mexico, USA. (August 2007)

Natural gas is gaseous petroleum - a mix of hydrocarbons in a gaseous state. About 50 to 90% of natural gas is methane (CH4). Other organic chemicals in natural gas include ethane, propane, butane, and occasionally pentane. In terms of energy, about 6,000 cubic feet of gas ("cfg") is equivalent to one barrel of crude oil (= hydrocarbons / petroleum in a liquid state).

Seen here is a petroleum well being actively drilled in August 2007 at Whites City, just outside of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. Natural gas wells can be spectacles when initially drilled - rigs are required to flare off natural gas during the drilling process. When high volumes of pressurized natural gas are encountered, the result is a large flare at the end of the blow line.
