Description

Ndudzo Makhatini groeide op aan de oostkust van Zuid-Afrika. Zijn oma was een genezeres die zang en muziek gebruikte, net als de zulu-krijgers afkomstig uit hetzelfde gebied. De liefde voor piano kreeg hij mee van zijn moeder. In zijn begeesterde spel legt hij de link tussen rituele muziek, gospel en jazz, in de traditie van Zuid-Afrikaanse jazzlegendes als Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa en Abdullah Ibrahim.

Buiten Zuid-Afrika werd Ndudzo Makhathini bekend als pianist in de groep The Ancestors geleid door saxofoonsensatie Shabaka Hutchings uit Londen. Saxofoon en zang zijn prominent aanwezig op zijn eerste album voor het prestigieuze label Blue Note, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds. Hiervoor bracht Makhathini al acht albums uit onder zijn eigen naam.
