editDescriptionNelsonite-anorthosite (Poe Mountain Anorthosite, Mesoproterozoic, 1.431-1.436 Ga; Sybille Canyon, Laramie Range, Wyoming, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Anorthosite-nelsonite intrusive contact from the Precambrian of Wyoming, USA. (~4.3 centimeters across at its widest)
The grayish material in this specimen is anorthosite, a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar. Anorthosites usually have a minor pyroxene component as well. It is a scarce rock on Earth, but is abundant on the Moon. The blackish material at top in the sample is nelsonite, a rare intrusive igneous rock. Nelsonites are also known as FTP rocks, in reference to their composition: iron-rich (Fe), titanium-rich (Ti), and phosphorus-rich (P). These rocks are principally composed of dark gray to blackish, metallic-lustered magnetite (Fe3O4) and ilmenite (FeTiO3) (or ilmenomagnetite; titanian magnetite), plus apatite (CaPO4). Minor minerals reported in nelsonites include spinel, olivine, pyrrhotite, and graphite. Nelsonite rocks typically occur as Fe-Ti-oxide concentrations in anorthosite complexes. They appear to form as cumulates in cooling batholiths. This specimen shows the contact between anorthosite and nelsonite. The latter is either a lens/nodule or a dike or dike-like intrusive body, apparently formed by remobilized Fe-Ti-oxide cumulates. Geologic unit: Sybille Fe-Ti Oxide Deposit, Poe Mountain Anorthosite, Laramie Anorthosite Complex, early Mesoproterozoic, 1.431 to 1.436 Ga Locality: loose piece from road gravel piles along the northern side of Route 34 - derived from the Sybille Pit uphill from the gravel piles, just east of the mouth of Johnson Creek Canyon, Sybille Canyon, Laramie Range, eastern Albany County, southeastern Wyoming, USA |
