This family of about 140 species are called canivorous plants because they gain their nutrients from trapping and consuming animals or insects. They are mostly climbing, long-stemmed woody vines called lianas, growing throughout the tropics in Australia, Borneo, Sumatra, Philippines and Madagascar. The pitchers are modified leaves that trap insects in order to gain nutrients from them. The pitchers have special glands that produce nectar to attract insects. Slippery hairs stop them from climbing out and they eventually drown. Pitcher plants are sometimes called Monkey Cups as monkeys have been known to drink from the pitcher.
