Nerita tessellata Gmelin, 1791 - checkered nerite snails in a rocky shore intertidal zone. These Nerita snails are on an epikarstified aragonitic limestone surface in the high intertidal zone. They are grazing on algal/bacterial films by scraping the rocks with their radulae. The limestone rock is part of the upper Grotto Beach Formation (119 to 131 ka, lower Upper Pleistocene). Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Neritidae Locality: southern side of Rocky Point (northern end of Sand Dollar Beach), northwestern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas |
