English: Map from 1865 of the former municipality Alkemade (province South Holland, Netherlands), about 8 km northeast of Leiden. The municipality contained no village of that name. Alkemade existed since the introduction of municipalities as a form of local government in the Netherlands (around 1812). In 1855 Alkemade absorbed the small municipality Vrije en Lage Boekhorst. On 1 January 2009 Alkemade and Jacobswoude merged to form the new municipality of Kaag en Braassem. (The municipality of Jacobswoude had existed only 18 years; it was created in 1991 when the municipalities Woubrugge, Rijnsaterwoude en Leimuiden merged). |
