Summary edit

Description

I am next to a Hohenschwangau fountain with a Catholic Madonna and Child imagery. On the lower left, a Bavarian knight in blue and white stands, while on the lower right, a red knight carrying the local swan motif stands.

"Schwan" means swan, and the medieval knights based in this area used the swan motif extensively.

In the distance is Neuschwanstein, located where the rising sun's rays strike first. It was built on the site of two previous medieval castles. It was Mad King Ludwig himself who scouted the site and commenced construction in the 1880s, as Bavaria lost its sovereignty to Prussia and he decided he wanted no more of the political headaches. He had several more castle projects around Bavaria - quickly bankrupting the family and national treasury. Eventually he was declared mentally unfit to rule, found dead two days later with the cause of death (suicide? homicide?) never conclusively proven, and within weeks, a castle that was meant to be a very private fantasy retreat became a tourist magnet.
