editDescriptionNeutrino beam production.svg |
English: Muon neutrino beam production on the example of the beam in the T2K experiment. Beam of protons from an accelerator hits a graphite target, producing secondary particles, which are mainly pions and, to a lesser extent, kaons. Negative particles are defocused by a set of three magnetic horns, while positive particles are focused and directed into a tunnel called the decay volume or decay tunnel. Positive pions and kaons decay mainly into antimuons and muon neutrinos. All remaining hadrons and charged leptons are stopped by a 75-ton block of graphite (so-called beam dump) and in the ground behind the block, while the beam of neutrinos travel underground unimpeded.
