Description

New-York Tribune, November 9, 1919 Caption: "New York Tribune The White House of the Cliff Dwellers A blanketed Navajo Indian goatherd studiously contemplates one of the finest ruins in America —that of an ancient city carved out of the red sandstone of a massive canyon wall by the cliff dwellers of other centuries. Here the awe-in-spiring walls of the canyon tower upward for 2,000 feet above a river bed of deadly quicksand. Sheltered from the elements by a 200-foot overhang, the cliff dwellers of long ago lived on this rocky shelf in peace and security, making their way to and from the outside world by means of trailing rope ladders down the precipitous face of the cliff.
