English: New Delhi, India. 11 February 1945. The most important sporting fixture this year was the cricket 'Test', England v. Australia, played by teams representing the RAF and RAAF in India and Burma. In their first meeting in 1944, England won on the first innings, but in the second encounter on 10 and 11 February 1945, the Australian XI, led by former Test captain, Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Vic Richardson, won by ten wickets. Wide publicity was given to the game and both days' play was broadcast by all India Radio. Many RAAF servicemen and former Australians domiciled in India watched the game. A keen spectator at the match was Group Captain Hughie Edwards VC DSO DFC of Fremantle, WA (centre). He watches play from the boundary with members of the Australian team. Left to right: Corporal Jim Mason of Kew, Vic; Pilot Officer Tom Connors of Albert Park, Vic; Flt Lt Don Ross of Geelong, Vic; Warrant Officer W. (Chota) Dawes of Piggabeen, Tweed Heads, NSW. |
