While traveling in southern Virginia heading toward North Carolina's Outer Banks on May 13, 2012, we ran parallel to a Norfolk Southern freight train hauling brand new General Electric locomotives. These railway engines were GE ES58ACi export versions built for the Vale Railroad system in Brazil. From markings on the engines, it appears they are destined for use in passenger service on the Carajás Railroad. The Carajás Railroad (EFC) passenger train links the states of Maranhão and Pará via 25 villages and towns. Safe and efficient, tickets for this service are up to 50% cheaper than road transportation, and it is the choice of 1,300 passengers per day. Six brand new engines were being transported on this fine spring day, with Vale engine numbers 231 through 236 |
