Description
English: Theft prevention is very strict and rightly so, for this is a curious set of tiles representing the Kaába. Guidebook Strolling through Istanbul states the quality of the tiles is "inferior to those in earlier mosques, the celebrated Iznik tiles of the period 1555-1620. I agree, their designs are rather pedestrian and the spectacular colours are lacking. Still there are many.
English: Tiles from the best period are extremely valuable. So a panel representing the big mosque in Mecca and the Kaaba needs to be protected from theft. In several mosques I have seen empty spaces where thiefs had taken tiles out.
