C’est dans ce lieu que se produisent notamment The Rockettes, groupe de danse féminin qui perdure depuis 50 ans. On y organise chaque année à l’époque de Noël le Radio City Christmas Spectacular, l’un des shows les plus regardés aux États-Unis. HISTOIRE : Le Radio City Music Hall fait partie du Rockefeller Center, un complexe de 14 bâtiments voulu par le magnat du pétrole, John Davison Rockefeller (1839-1937). Ses intérêts rencontrèrent ceux de la Metropolitan Opera Company qui cherchait alors à quitter le Garment District depuis le début des années 1920 : il était décidé que le Rockefeller Center comprendrait un opéra. Le krach de 1929 et la Grande Dépression qui s'en suivit, firent revoir les ambitions du projet à la baisse : il n'était plus question de construire l'opéra. Des chaînes de radio s’installèrent au Rockefeller Center qui fut bientôt surnommé « Radio City1. » Ce nom provient du premier locataire du complexe, la Radio Corporation of America. La NBC ouvrit ses studios dans le GE Building, situé au sud du Radio Music City Hall. Surnommé Showplace of the Nation, le Radio City Music Hall était un projet de Rockefeller, de Samuel Roxy Rothafel, créateur du Roxy Theater en 1927 et de David Sarnoff. La salle fut conçue par Donald Deskey et ouvert au public le 27 décembre 1932, avec un spectacle auquel participèrent Ray Bolger et Martha Graham. Mais la salle n'eut pas le succès escompté par ses créateurs. Le 11 janvier 1933, le premier film diffusé sur un grand écran fut La Grande Muraille (The Bitter Tea of General Yen) avec Barbara Stanwyck. LA SALLE : La grande scène, large de 104 mètres et profonde de 20, ressemble à un soleil couchant. Son système d’ascenseur, très sophistiqué, a été copié par l’U.S. Navy pour les systèmes hydrauliques équipant les porte-avions de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La légende raconte que des agents gouvernementaux surveillaient les caves de l’immeuble afin de conserver cette suprématie technologique. L'intérieur du Radio City Music Hall fut déclaré City landmark en 1978. |
