DescriptionNew York from Brooklyn Bridge (4620147531).jpg |
I began a long walk in Manhattan by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. This photo has famous buildings from different eras. The tall buiIding at the left is 20 Exchange Place. 60 Wall Tower is next. Met Life Tower is to its right, and the Chase Manhattan Building is the modern skyscraper. FDR Drive, named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt, runs along the East River and crosses the bottom of the photo. Note the old, low buildings in the foreground. 20 Exchange Place was built in 1930-1931, as the City Bank-Farmers Trust Building. It is 59 stories, 741 ft (226 m) high. 60 Wall Tower was built in 1930-1932. It has 66 floors, and is 952 feet (290 m) high. It was once the Cities Service Building, and is now the American International Building. Metropolitan Life (Met Life) Tower is 700 ft (213 m) high. It has 66 floors. It was completed in 1909, and was the world's tallest building until the Woolworth Building was completed in 1913. The Chase Manhattan Building was one of the few large, "modern" buildings in Lower Manhattan in 1965. It was completed in 1961, It has 60 floors above ground, an is 813 ft (248 m) high. The old skyscrapers are tall and slender. That is probably because it was hard to get good air circulation in a building with a large cross-section before air conditioning. On many New York buildings, I found different numbers for height and even number of floors, and had to choose one. |
