ely moored at the wharfin the still waters of a perfectly land-locked harbor. Vesselsof the largest tonnage can enter at all periods of the tide, therise of which does not exceed four feet. The entrance of thenarrows, between Signal Hill and Fort Amherst, is about 1,400feet in width, and at the the narrowest point, between Pancakeand Chain Rocks, the channel is not more than 600 feet. Theharbor is over a mile in length and between a quarter and halfa mile in width. It is deep, with a mud bottom, having fromfive to ten fathoms, and in the centre it is ninety feet deep.Of its size it would be difficult to find a finer harbor. The city is built on the northern side of the harbor on asite which could scarcely be surpassed. From the waters edgethe ground rises with a slope till the summit is reached, wherethere is a large level space. Along the face of this slope themain streets run, and the city is rapidly extending itself in alldirections beyond. Three principal streets run parallel with
