English: Newliston, the house from the north west A Robert Adam house, one of his last, completed in 1792 shortly after his death. The wings were added in 1845. It replaced an earlier house, of which there is no trace. A private home open, with the extensive grounds, on Garden Open Days. The original owners were the Dundas family. The last Dundas of Newliston, Elizabeth, married Sir John Dalrymple [1669] who became the first Earl of Stair. The second Earl became British Ambassador to the Court of Versailles, retired to Newliston and from 1722-1744 did the landscaping and treeplanting, so there are some fine trees on the estate. |
