Ngā Rongoā a Te Māori - medicinal uses for plants This poster came to Archives New Zealand Auckland with records from the Tauranga School of Nursing and describes the uses of plants in traditional medicine. The plants listed were used to treat a range of ailments including stomach ache, skin itch, burns and abrasions, skin infections, ear ache, colds and bronchial complaints. The gum from Mamaku (Black tree fern) was used to treat burns and abrasions, and the inner pith of the koru or new shoot was used as a poultice to draw out infection. Archives New Zealand holds research project files from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. These files outline projects in the fields of medicine and public health. One example is a survey of Maori medicine usage in Northland in 1993-1994 [Archives reference: R21980505 YCBN 5815 A1543 216/d 93/214]. The survey report includes lists of plants, medicines used by those surveyed, complaints treated, and thoughts on how medicine should be made available.
