Summary
editDescriptionNiche from Samaritane house 15-16th century Damascus 8421.jpg |
English: The niche comes from a building in the Damascus district of al-Malik az-Zahir, which is named after the Mamluk Sultan az-Zahir Baibars. The decor of the niche also suggests dating to the Mamluk period (1250-1517).
The inscriptions on the niche are quotations from the Torah in Samaritan script. The Samaritans are a Jewish religious community that was only expelled from Damascus in the 17th century and now lives in the West Bank and Israel. This niche is an example of a decorative design language that was used by all three religious communities living in Damascus. |
