Summary
editDescriptionNineteenth century enclosures that have reverted back to nature - geograph.org.uk - 712696.jpg |
English: Nineteenth century enclosures that have reverted back to nature This outcrop of the Precambrian rocks of the Avalon Terrane north and west of the Cambrian Slate Belt weathers to give thin acidic soils. In the early nineteenth century it was colonized by scores of quarrymen-farmers who created small hay meadows on the flatter areas. After WWII the smallholdings were subsumed into large sheep farms and the meadows, uneconomic to maintain, were allowed to revert back to nature. |
