Summary

edit
Description Chapel of St. Mary of the Castle, built in 1694 on the site of a 12th century chapel built by the Knight Templars within the Monsanto Castle, Castelo Branco district. By 1813 it was being used as a warehouse but it was badly damaged by the explosion of a gunpowder magazine struck by lightning in 1815, which also destroyed a good deal of the castle. The 3rd volume of theGuia de Portugal originally published in 1944 refers to the chapel as a ruin. The latest reconstruction probably dates from the second half of the 20th century. It is not historically accurate, but fits into the general illusion of a medieval setting.
