Summary edit

Description

This is an eastbound Norfolk Southern Railway container train in the late morning of 10 May 2016 at Horseshoe Curve, west of Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA. The leading two units were Norfolk Southern # 7538, a General Electric ES44DC, and # 1043, a General Motors Electro-Motive Division SD70ACe. The third unit, seen above, is NS # 9442, a General Electric C40-9.

In the background is a westbound train with Deep Rock Refining Company tank cars that are used to transport petroleum (crude oil).

The rocks in the Horseshoe Curve railroad cut (Kittanning Point; Kittanning Mountain) are fluvial sandstones of the Rockwell Formation (Famennian Stage to Kinderhookian Stage, upper Upper Devonian to lower Lower Mississippian).
