North points towards the lower right in this photo taken at about 6:30 Central Daylight Time on July 26, 1971. North America and some of the Great Lakes can be seen at the lower right, with the Pacific Ocean at the top. The photo, AS15-91-12344, was taken sometime after photo AS15-91-12343, which was published as Figure 3-4 of the Apollo 15 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-315). The caption for 91-12343 states that the crew saw a gibbous Earth after the transposition, docking, and Lunar Module extraction maneuver. This is a crop from the whole file which includes more black film and the punch outs on the edges of the film. This photo is categorized as AS15-91-12344. |
