Description

c/n CCF4-521 Built under license in Canada by Canadian Car and Foundry. Allocated the US military serial 52-8600 and designated as a T-6H. In 1956, as part of Canadian aid to NATO, it was dismantled and shipped to Belfast, Northern Island, where it was re-assembled by Short Brothers and then flown to Germany for the West German Air Force with the identity ‘AA+077’. It is known to have been operated by Flugzeugfürerschule A (Pilot school A) at Landsberg am Lech, but was later re-coded as ‘BF+077’ and used by the Technischen Schule der Luftwaffe 1 (Aviation Technical School 1) at Kaufbeuren. Overhauled by the Messerschmitt factory at Manching during 1964, it then joined the Portuguese Air Force as ‘1737’. It was modified for counter-insurgency (COIN) work and flew during the Guinea-Bissau War of Independence, operating with Esquadra 121 “Roncos” based at Bissalanca (Base Aérea No 12). By 1974 it was back in Portugal and based at Tancos (Base Aérea No 3) with Esquadra 33. On 11th March 1975 it was flown against a revolutionary group in Lisbon during what turned out to be an unsuccessful coup. Retired from service during 1976, it was stored at Alverca between 1980 and 1989 and then at Ota between 1997 and 2004. Restored by Museu Aero Fénix, it was completed in 2013 and then went on display at Sintra. It is now on display in Hangar 2 ‘African Military Campaigns’. Museo do Ar, Sintra, Portugal.
