Description

c/n 122-38675. Built in late 1944 and delivered to the United States Army Air Force in January 1945 with the full US military serial 44-72216. Operated by the 487th Fighter Squadron, part of the 352 Fighter Group based at Bodney in Norfolk under 8th Air Force control. She was initiall coded HO-M and named “Miss Helen”, although her name was later changed to “Miss Nita” when she was allocated to a different pilot. Stored in Germany after the end of the war, she was sold to Sweden in February 1948 and redesignated as a J26 by the Swedish Air Force, who operated her with the serial Fv26116. In March 1953 she was sold to Israel and saw Israeli Defence Force Air Force service with the serial 2343. By 1976 her remains were in a childrens playground at Ein Gedi in Israel. She was one of many airframes rescued from Israel by Robs Lamplough and restoration began at Duxford during 1977. The project later moved to North Weald and used the wings from 44-72770 which had been at a technical school in the Netherlands. She was civil registered as G-BIXL in July 1981 and flew again on 5th May 1987. She took part in filming the 1989 remake of “Memphis Belle” for which she was painted in an earlier olive drab scheme, coded ‘AJ-L’ and named “Miss L”, returning to her original 487th colour scheme soon afterwards. She changed owner in 2015 but is still a regular airshow performer and is believed to be the ONLY surviving aircraft to have flown with the 352nd Fighter Group during World War 2. She is seen on the flightline before displaying at the Imperial War Museum’s 2021 Battle of Britain Air Show. Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK
