DescriptionNorth Dorset Trailway at Corfe Mullen - geograph.org.uk - 982286.jpg |
English: North Dorset Trailway at Corfe Mullen When the Dorset Central Railway opened their line south from Blandford in 1860, it ran to Wimborne, represented here by the muddy path bearing to the left in the centre of the picture. Trains for Poole had to reverse at Wimborne. In 1893, by which time the line had become part of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and extended north to Bath, a chord line was opened to Broadstone, south of Wimborne, to provide a direct route to Poole and the new seaside resort of Bournemouth. The two lines, both of which were single track, split at Corfe Mullen Junction about 200 metres behind the camera, the Broadstone line passing to the right of the bushes in the centre of the photograph. The Wimborne line closed as a through route about 1933 and the Broadstone line to passengers in 1966 and to goods in 1972. The use of this part of the line by horses (see Simon Scurr's photograph dated March 2007) was formalised in October 2007 when the section from Bailey Gate Crossing, on the A31 road west of Corfe Mullen, to Brog Street, half a mile along the Wimborne line, was opened as part of the North Dorset Trailway. Eventually, when funding can be found, it is hoped to surface the track for walkers and cyclists. |
