Description

A plaque next to this bronze statue at the Fairmont reads:

"Concerned about the growing lawlessness of the West, the Canadian House of Commons created the North West Mounted Police in August of 1873. The 'Royal' designation was later conferred upon the force by King Edward VII.

Legendary for the fearless and diplomatic way in which they enforced Canadian law, the 'Mounties' became a symbol of our nation and an icon of what Canada means to the world. This bronze statue was created by Alberta artist Harry O'Hanlon, 1916-1996."
