DescriptionNorth West Mounted Police.JPG |
English: Image of a public domain photograph (circa 1900) of a group of NWMP members attached to the British Army during the Boer War in South Africa. The following caption was written below the original photograph as displayed in the NWMP post at Weadickville (Stampede Park): "Group photo of some North West Mounted Police members attached to the British Army during the Boar War in South Africa. Initially there was a nucleus of the NWMP that formed the 2nd Battalion “C” and “D“ Squadrons of the Canadian Mounted Rifles. Later, a special Corps of Roughriders known as “Strathcona’s Horse” recruited in Western Canada and assembled at Calgary on February 9th, 1900, under the command of Col. S. B. Steele (NWMP) provided an outstanding additional force to the Boer War, a special breed of men, mounties, ranchers, cowboys and townsmen inured to long hours in the saddle and life on the plain, all good shots mounted on range-bred mustangs with California type saddles and lariats, and arms of MK-IV Lee Metford rifles and Colt 45’s." |
