Summary edit

Description

The Top of the Rock, which occupies Floors 67, 69, and 70 at 30 Rockefeller Center, is an observation deck that had been closed 1987-2005 but has now reopened.

This is the north view. The dark rectangle is Central Park, which, for many Manhattanites, is the backyard they absolutely need on this very crowded island. The water reflections of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir are visible toward the distance.

To the left of Central Park is the Upper West Side, the most residential part of Manhattan. To the right is the Upper East Side, which is a lot like the Upper West Side, except for being very posh. Beyond Central Park is Harlem, the predominantly African-American neighborhood that had descended into severe urban decay but now is seeing a renaissance.

The area facing Central Park South (foreground) is home to a number of points of interest as well, including Carnegie Hall.

In the distance to the left can be seen George Washington Bridge, which connects the uppermost reaches of Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey. It carries I-95, and also is the unofficial eastern terminus of I-80, which stretches west to San Francisco, though the actual I-80 starts a few miles southwest in Leonia, New Jersey. Opened in 1931, it was the longest bridge in the world at the time, and since expansion to two decks and fourteen traffic lanes in 1962, it remains the bridge with the most vehicular traffic lanes in the world.

In the distance to the right would be the borough of The Bronx, the only part of New York City on the US mainland. Manhattan and The Bronx are separated by the Harlem River. The Yankee Stadium is in The Bronx on the Harlem River shores.

I love this view, and this city. So glad to be back after a long absence.
