English: This is the Statue of Notre-Dame de Lourdes in the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul in Tunis, Tunisia
On Thursday, February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, aged 14, went to Massabielle, on the bank of the Gave. Near Lourdes, in the Pyrenees, to gather firewood. She hears - like a gust of wind - and then sees a Lady in the rock. "She wore a white robe and a blue sash, and a yellow rose on each foot, the color of the chain of her rosary." The Virgin Mary appears to her 18 times between February 11 and July 16 of the same year. During these apparitions, the Virgin asks for penance for sinners, for a procession to be made to the grotto, and for a chapel to be built there. Furthermore, the Virgin Mary causes a spring with miraculous water to gush forth. On March 25, she reveals her name: "I am the Immaculate Conception." The Bishop of Tarbes officially recognizes the apparitions in 1862. Subsequently, a church is erected - now a large sanctuary - as the Virgin Mary wished. Bernadette Soubirous dies on April 16, 1879. She was beatified on June 14, 1925, and canonized on December 8, 1933, by Pope Pius XI. |
