editDescriptionNottingham Eye in Old Market Square - geograph.org.uk - 1251559.jpg |
English: Nottingham Eye in Old Market Square. In 2008 and again in 2009 this gigantic wheel appeared for a few weeks in Old Market Square. It completely dwarfs the famous Nottingham Council House in the background. Despite the introduction of the new tramway system, whose rails and overhead can be seen in the foreground, the city centre is looking a bit tired and run down. Having been in Sheffield earlier in the day the contrast was noticeable, and not in Nottingham's favour unfortunately.
An interesting point about this area is that for almost 40 years until the mid-1960's, Nottingham's double deck trolleybuses ran through here. And up to the mid-1930's the first generation of trams did too. It's nice to see that Nottingham has again gone in for electric street traction, which in the present climate (in all senses) is probably the sensible way forward for all large cities. |
