Their story was retold in a fourteenth-century novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which became popular in Japan.This exquisitely detailed triptych is a special type of privately comissioned gift print called surimono. The embossing, metallic pigments, and high-quality paper indicate that these were costly productions."
