English: "
Gaining insights into the historical development of carbon accounting models allows for a contextual understanding of the present state of carbon accounting and reporting practices. This paper explores the progression of methodologies and frameworks used in carbon accounting by examining previous models, as depicted in Figure 1. This figure illustrates four distinct peaks of publication activity. The initial peak, which emerged around 2009, appears to be more nuanced. Whilst it could be attributed to increased interest following the release of the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, a closer examination of the literature suggests otherwise. Notably, the most influential paper during this period, titled ‘A review of recent multi-region input-output models used for consumption-based emission and resource accounting’ by Wiedmann (2009), garnered significant attention with 1275 citations (August 2023). This review provided a comprehensive analysis of carbon accounting and reporting methods across diverse sectors and scales, establishing it as a pivotal contribution to the field." |
