Summary edit

Description

Terms such as those on these mock-up cereal boxes– “lite,” “fresh,” “fiber,” “natural,” and “low sodium” -- as well as those on real grocery shelves confused most consumers. In 1990, George Bush signed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA), giving FDA authority to require nutrition labeling of most regulated foods and to regulate terms used in nutrient content claims such as “high fiber” and “low fat.”
