DescriptionOCNMS - Tidepool (29381004354).jpg |
The tidepools of West Coast sanctuaries like Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary are isolated pockets of seawater that collect in low spots along the shore during low tide. They form on rocky coasts where depressions have been scoured in the shoreline or where boulders and debris prevent water from draining back to the sea. The planets and animals that live within them are alternately covered and abandoned by the shifting tides, forcing them to cope with extreme physical, chemical and biological changes.
