Angela Hucles, an Olympic medalist in women’s football, visited Ukraine April 2-5, 2013, and lead a series of programs to support young women in sports in Donetsk and Luhansk. Hucles visited several Ukrainian schools to speak about the role of women in sports, to provide information about scholarships for athletes at American universities, and to run sports and leadership clinics for young women athletes.

Angela Hucles is a retired American women’s football player who was the offensive star for Team USA at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Her four goals in the tournament helped the team to win a gold-medal victory. Hucles began playing football at age 7; she was so talented that she played on boys’ teams. While studying at the University of Virginia, Hucles achieved a record for the most game-winning goals and still holds the record for all-time scores with 59 goals and 139 points in her university career. Angela made her first appearance for the U.S. Women's National Team in 2002 and helped her team win the Olympic Gold in Athens in 2004.

Angela passionately believes in donating her time to make the world a better place. She speaks frequently with school groups about the importance of saving money, and works to empower students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression and service-learning and inspires them to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities. In 2009, she was named Humanitarian of the Year by the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

Angela graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in anthropology. She currently lives in Boston where she played for the Boston Breakers in the 2009 inaugural season of the Women's Professional Soccer league. She is a member of the advisory board for You Can Play, a campaign dedicated to fighting homophobia in sports. She is the founder of the Empowerment Through Sport Leadership Series, which works to promote and encourage positive change and leadership through sports, and to encourage parents to support their daughter athletes.
